27 May STRETCHING EXERCISE FOR CEREBRAL PALSY
Lack of full joint motion due to the increased muscle tone may interfere with skill acquisition and daily care of children with cerebral palsy (CP).
Daily stretching at home is highly encouraged to prevent complications like contractures where the muscle and ligaments become shortened, and the limbs cannot be straightened again. Here we listed the general guidelines of stretching exercise for CP children as a guide for parents.
Before you start, please refer to your therapist on the best way to do it. Practice in front of them to make sure you are replicating the technique correctly. After all, you are the one going to do the stretching exercise every day at home, so it is important to ensure you really get it right.
Whenever you have any doubt, talk with your therapist rather than seeking solutions blindly from the internet or other parents. Remember that every child is different. What’s okay for other CP children may not be okay for yours. Keep that in mind and happy stretching!
