14 Dec THE VERSATILITY OF PLATFORM SWING
Platform swing is one of the popular swings used by the occupational therapists for sensory integration therapy. It is a flat quadrilateral swing usually in the shape of a square, but
sometimes can be a rectangle too.
For therapy purposes ,to withstand the weight of the users, the base is usually made from a strong wood which is then covered with soft materials for safety measure and comfortability. Similarly the rope is made from durable materials and connected to the hook by strong carabiners.
All of us know that it has many benefits for kids with sensory processing disorders, but why is it a popular choice?
Its flat surface and wide base allows the user to be in various positions on it; lying, sitting and even standing. This makes room for many creative ideas of activities! For extra safety or if the kid is afraid (usually happens during the first few sessions), the therapist or parent can sit on the swing together as long as the total weight doesn’t exceed the maximum recommendation. This also means that the child can have fun along with other kids, enhancing the communication skill among the peers.
Again, its flat wide base is beneficial as a start for kids with a fear of swings. At least it gives them an assurance that it is more stable when they are sitting on it compared to the round surface of a bolster swing.
Platform swing can be swung side to side, front to back or even in circular motion. Combined with the fact that the user can be in various positions, this adds another wide room for more creative activities that can be tried. So for home users on a tight budget and want to make the most of the resources, platform swing is recommended.
