WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AUTISM

You may have heard a lot of things about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from various people. That information may be true, may be myths, or even entirely false. There are a lot of mysteries spiraling along ASD that are yet to be uncovered, but as

we advanced into the modern world, more and more research has been done to answer the questions. Here we list the key facts that everybody needs to know.

1. ASD differs for each individual

No two people with autism are alike. It affects each person differently depending on the symptoms and severity. This is true for the interventions too. What works on Person A may not work on Person B and vice versa. Hence it is important for parents to not compare their child with others and remember that their progression is unique to their own only.

2. Sensory issues are common

One of the explanations for their frequent meltdowns is sensory processing issues that often present in individuals with ASD. Sensory issues can involve both hyper-sensitivities (over-responsiveness) and hypo-sensitivities (under-responsiveness). Sensory overload happens when there is an overstimulation from the senses and common symptoms include feeling irritable, anxiety, discomfort, stress and loss of focus.

3. Early intervention is important

Early intervention can help develop skills better. As mentioned above, intervention should be tailored according to the individual’s symptoms. The management commonly involves medical doctor, occupational therapists, psychologist, behavioral therapist, speech therapist, and early childhood education teacher.

4. Symptoms can change over time

With the combination of right interventions, they do progress over time. That’s why it is crucial to refer the child to the qualified people so that they can give the right information and advice. Another thing to remember is consistency is the key. It takes a lot of effort and patience in order to see the improvement, but being consistent with the interventions is surely rewarding.

Any doubt about this matter is better answered by the qualified doctor or therapist. Make sure to do a thorough research before believing any information that has been shared to you. As technology keeps on advancing, we will uncover a lot more mystery and it is best to keep updated too.
